    Here we have a
    Rare and Unusual Vintage 1926 TRUE TEMPER PAT. No. 1589683 Box Carton Opener Tool,
    THE AMER. FORK & HOE CO.
    William T. Clinger of Oil City, PA was awarded Pat No. 1,589,683 on 6/22/1926 for this carton opener tool.  Apparently, American Fork & Hoe co. / True Temper Brand acquired the rights to manufacture this tool. ( the very lengthy story of this large company can be found at http://www.yesteryearstools.com). It is made of 5/16" thick steel and has a paddle shaped tip.  The tip is flat on one side and is tapered down on the other side to allow it to be slid inside the carton for prying it open.  It also has a narrow nail slot so it can be used with wood crates the require the removal of nails.  The tool is also identified on both sides with A. F. & H. Co. on one side and True Temper on the other side. Tool is approx. 10-3/4" L and still has the remnants of the original green painted finish.  This is a rarely seen patented tool that deserves a place in your collection !!
