Description
SHORT 4-3/4” BUFFUM TOOL CO. DOOR LATCH WITH SWASTIKA MAKER’S MARK LOUISIANA, MO4-3/4” Buffum Tool Co. door or barn door latch or gate hook. This latch is shorter than many that I am seeing on the net and measures approximately 4-3/4” long. This cast latch has a Swastika Maker’s Mark. On one side of the latch it says, “Louisiana, MO No 572446” with the last number4 being difficult to read. The other side says, “Buffum Tool Co” followed by the Swastika. Notice that this is a different layout of words than on the 7” latch. The steel loop that keeps the latch from popping out of a steeple moves freely. There is very light rust over the entire surface of the door latch and I left it in the as-found condition except for minimal cleaning to be able to see what was being sold. This will clean up as new if desired. It is embossed Buffum Tool Co. with their swastika logo on one side and Louisiana Mo Pat Dec 1 96 on the other side. This unique item would look great in a collection!
From at least 1909 (or earlier) to 1922 The Buffum Tool Company was known all over the country for its top grade workmanship and the quality in the tools they made. His logo was the Good Luck/Blessing/Swastika Cross. Many of his advertisements for his tools contained the slogan “Buffum Tool Company, High Grade Tools For High Grade Workmen, Louisiana, Mo.” Frank was very proud of his workmanship, his product, his town, his state and his country. He clearly showed that in displaying his name, his town and state on every ad he sent out and every item he sent out.
